Since its inception in 2006 by the Council of Europe, Data Protection Day has been a cornerstone in raising awareness about privacy and the responsible use of data. January 28 commemorates the signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty on data protection. Over the past 19 years, the scope of data protection has expanded dramatically, adapting to new challenges brought about by rapid technological advancements, the proliferation of big data, and the digital transformation of society.
Today we live in an increasingly connected world where data has become a key resource for driving innovation in various sectors. However, its management requires special attention. With the increased use of big data analytics, artificial intelligence and cloud solutions, organizations face the challenge of maximizing the value of data while safeguarding the privacy of individuals. Data Protection Day reminds us that it is critical to balance innovation with responsibility.
The Continued Relevance of Data Protection
The relevance of data protection has never been greater. Companies now have unprecedented access to consumer and operational data, opening doors to new business opportunities. For instance, big data allows businesses to personalize customer experiences, optimize supply chains, and predict market trends. At the same time, the regulatory landscape—driven by frameworks such as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)—ensures that companies prioritize transparency, consent, and security.
This balance between innovation and responsibility aligns closely with open innovation, a principle championed by Inneürope. By fostering collaboration between public and private sectors, startups, and research institutions, open innovation creates ecosystems where data can be shared and utilized effectively while upholding ethical and legal standards. Inneürope’s Horizon Europe and Open Innovation projects exemplify this approach, demonstrating how data protection can serve as an enabler of trust and progress.
Inneürope’s Role in Data-Driven Innovation
FAME: A Federated Data Marketplace for Embedded Finance
The FAME project is a collaborative initiative to design and deploy a secure, energy-efficient federated data marketplace tailored for Embedded Finance (EmFi). By addressing limitations in centralized cloud marketplaces, FAME facilitates compliant, interoperable data exchange, decentralized trading, and trusted analytics. The marketplace aims to interconnect more than 12 data platforms, integrate 1,000+ data assets, and foster a vibrant EmFi stakeholder community.
Within this project, Inneürope and WeGrant are developing a pilot project: «The EU Funds Application Process Made Easy,» which simplifies access to complementary funding for businesses’ research projects by using data from previously funded R&D projects in Spain.
MODERATE: Empowering Building Data Sharing and Insights
MODERATE aims to create solutions for securely sharing and analyzing building performance data. To do so, it eliminates the limitations imposed by non-interoperable data silos by developing a platform that provides uniform access, ensures GDPR-compliant anonymization, and encourages open data sharing. This platform leverages cutting-edge technologies such as AI, IoT, and blockchain to improve decision-making for building owners, policymakers, and facility managers.
In MODERATE, Inneürope is leading the exploitation of the platform, focusing on business models, commercialization strategies, and ensuring long-term usability. By integrating synthetic data and secure data-sharing protocols, we help unlock the potential of data in the building industry.
VELES: Advancing Smart Health Data Ecosystems
The VELES project focuses on building a Smart Health ecosystem across Southeast Europe by establishing a Regional Smart Health Data Space. This initiative supports data sharing for innovative healthcare solutions, such as personalized medicine and improved disease prediction. VELES also integrates pilots in areas like cancer treatment and dementia care to demonstrate the impact of data-driven healthcare.
In VELES, Inneürope is leading the development of a transformational framework for the transition to a common healthcare data space where one of the key pillars is data privacy and cybersecurity.
Open Innovation: IT Finance & Data Challenge
The IT Finance & Data Challenge, co-organized by Inneürope and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aimed to create an innovative solution capable of analyzing and visualizing ADB’s enriched IT finance data in order to identify unique insights to enhance operational efficiency and strategic decision-making. Having received 43 applications from 15 countries across three continents in just 15 days, participants proposed groundbreaking solutions in areas like artificial intelligence (90%), cloud computing (75%), and big data (60%), addressing key challenges in the finance and data sectors. This initiative highlights how collaboration can drive innovation responsibly, reinforcing data protection as a foundational pillar for trust and progress.
Horizon Europe and Digital Europe: Shaping the Future of Data
The EU’s Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programs are pivotal in driving data-driven innovation. Horizon Europe focuses on research and innovation, funding projects that tackle global challenges and foster competitiveness. Digital Europe, on the other hand, aims to build the digital capacities of the EU, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced digital skills. Both programs emphasize the ethical use of data, ensuring that technological advancements respect fundamental rights.
Specifically, these programs offer funding opportunities for initiatives like ours, enabling the development of tools and frameworks that not only comply with regulations but also set new benchmarks for data-driven innovation.
