In the second session of the Venture Incubation Program (an EIT Digital initiative led by Inneürope), we tackled one of the most critical steps in the entrepreneurial journey: validating the market before moving forward.

The session, Market Validation & Early Testing, was led by Elias Tefarikis, founder of Smyrna Labs and international mentor with over 20 years of experience in innovation, corporate venturing, and startup-corporate collaboration across the U.S., LATAM, and Europe. His message was crystal clear:

“Move fast, but with clarity. Validate the business early and focus on creating real value. Tech without purpose is just noise.”

Elias held nothing back: tools, insights, real-world examples—and warnings. If one thing was clear, it’s that validating isn’t about launching a website or sending a survey. It’s about getting out there, talking to real users, and testing if someone is truly willing to pay (or at least use) your solution.

Key takeaways that resonated with the participants:

  • Validation is not optional. The market will tell you the truth. If there’s no interest or willingness to pay, it’s time to rethink—or pivot—before it’s too late.
  • Don’t talk. Ask. Discovery interviews are a goldmine—if you know how to listen more than pitch.
  • Fewer features, more focus. It’s not about adding functionalities; it’s about solving a real problem clearly and measurably.
  • Metrics matter. Retention, actual usage, real buying intent—tracking them from day one helps you build with intention.
  • Yes, even the big players get it wrong. Giants like Apple and Meta also miss the mark sometimes. The key isn’t avoiding mistakes—it’s learning fast and cheap.

Beyond the insights, participants worked hands-on with their Lean Canvas, identifying customer segments, real problems, and value propositions. With one clear mantra: experiment, document, and learn faster than your competitors.

Engagement was high. Startups shared challenges, pivoted ideas on the fly, and left with clear next steps: complete their validations, conduct at least five real interviews, and return with fresh insights for the next module.

As Elias puts it: “It’s not about being right. It’s about getting results.”

Next stop: “AI and Other Technology Adoption”, led by John Soldatos. And yes—we’ll keep sharing this journey with the hashtag #VentureIncubationProgram 😉
